About Tower Performance

We have been working on cooling towers since 1964: repairing them, upgrading them, testing them and building new ones. It is the only thing we do.

Sixty years of one specialty

Tower Performance has been involved in every phase of cooling tower work since 1964, from routine repair through thermal upgrade to the design and construction of new towers.

That is an unusually narrow specialty to sustain for six decades, and it is the point. A general mechanical contractor encounters a cooling tower occasionally. We encounter nothing else, which means we have seen your problem before, including the failures that only appear after thirty years of service, and the towers built by companies that no longer exist.

Today the company operates as Tower Performance LLC from Baytown, Texas, on the Gulf Coast, which is where the density of refineries, petrochemical plants and industrial cooling towers in the United States is highest.

What we actually do

  • Repairs and thermal upgrades on towers from every manufacturer
  • Design and construction of new towers, with guaranteed thermal performance
  • Inspections, written evaluations and CTI ATC-105 performance testing
  • Emergency and storm response when a tower is out of service
  • Replacement parts for any tower, any make, any model

We specialize in designing towers that are highly energy-efficient, and in thermal upgrades that get more out of the tower an owner already has. Both come down to the same thing: understanding what the tower is really doing before deciding what to change.

Our guarantee

Four commitments we have made since 1964

These four points have been the company's promise to its customers for decades. They are worth stating plainly because each one is specific enough to be held to.

Quick turnaround on field work

Field work completed quickly and on time, to meet your deadlines. On a cooling tower, a schedule slip is not an inconvenience; it either extends an outage or pushes the work past the window entirely.

Immediate response on maintenance and parts

We respond immediately to maintenance and parts needs. Downtime is lost money, and a part that arrives after the outage has closed is worth very little.

Guaranteed performance, independently tested

Thermal upgrades and new towers will meet their guaranteed performance levels when independently tested. That qualifier is the whole substance of the promise, and it is why we test to CTI ATC-105.

Turnkey projects, on time and on budget

Complete turnkey projects delivered to your specification, on time and within budget: design, supply, construction and commissioning as one responsibility rather than several.

Who we work for

Industrial plants, and the buildings in between

Our clients include major chemical companies, oil and gas refineries, utilities, air separation companies and industrial plants of every kind.

Industrial & process

  • Oil and gas refineries
  • Petrochemical and chemical plants
  • Power generation and cogeneration
  • Pulp and paper
  • Air separation facilities
  • Plastics, steel and food processing
  • Utilities
  • Processing plants of all kinds

Institutional & commercial

  • Hospitals and medical centers
  • Universities and campuses
  • Office buildings
  • Apartment buildings and hotels
  • Stadiums and arenas
  • Data centers
  • Shopping centers
  • Government and institutional facilities
Difficult applications are our normal work

Much of what we do involves special applications: high and low pH water, high hot water temperatures, low wet bulb temperatures and severe winter operating conditions. See capabilities for how each of those changes the job.

Standards

What we build and test to

Cooling tower work is governed by a small number of standards that genuinely matter, and by a great deal of site-specific requirement that matters just as much.

Design and construction

  • Cooling Technology Institute (CTI): materials, construction and component standards, including CTI structural timber grades and CTI Standard 136 for fill and CTI Standard 101 for nozzles
  • OSHA: access, guarding, fall protection and worker safety requirements
  • International Building Code, with applicable state and local amendments, for structural, wind and seismic loading. Gulf Coast wind loading is not a formality
  • AGMA: gear and drive component standards on mechanical equipment

Performance testing

Thermal performance is tested to CTI Acceptance Test Code ATC-105, the cooling tower industry's standard method for establishing a tower's actual capability as a percentage of its design capability. It is the reason we can guarantee performance rather than predict it.

Contractor prequalification

If you need our safety statistics, insurance certificates, prequalification status or site-specific documentation for a procurement process, call (713) 643-0691 and ask. We would rather send you current documents directly than publish figures on a web page that goes stale.

Independent by design

We do not manufacture cooling towers and we are not a distributor for any manufacturer. When we tell you a tower can be repaired instead of replaced, there is nothing in it for us either way.

Where we are

Baytown, Texas: in the middle of the work

Our shop and office are in Baytown, on the Houston Ship Channel, surrounded by the largest concentration of refining and petrochemical capacity in the United States.

That matters for response time. Most of the plants we serve are a drive away rather than a flight away, which is the difference between attending an outage the same day and attending it the following week. We work across the Gulf Coast and travel beyond it for the right project.

Sixty years of towers, and yours is probably one we know

Tell us the make, the model and what it is doing. If we have worked on one before, and we usually have, we can tell you what tends to go wrong with it and what we would check first.
