Repairs & upgrades
Most towers we are called to look at do not need replacing. They need the right components, installed correctly, and sometimes a thermal redesign of what is already there.
Colder water from the tower you already own
A thermal upgrade replaces the internals and, where necessary, the water distribution and air path, using current-generation components. The structure stays. The performance changes.
Fill technology has moved a long way. A tower built in the 1970s or 1980s is very often running splash fill, oversized nozzles and first-generation drift eliminators. Replacing those with modern film fill and properly matched distribution can produce a measurable drop in cold water temperature without touching the structure or the basin.
What an upgrade can achieve
- Colder water at the same flow: more condenser capacity, better process efficiency
- Or the same water temperature from fewer cells, which frees a cell for standby, or lets you take one out of service permanently
- Lower fan horsepower for the same duty
- Crossflow to counterflow conversion where the application justifies it
- Close approach to wet bulb for applications that need it
Because the gain shows up directly on the energy bill and in process throughput, thermal upgrades often carry a fast payback. That is a calculation we would rather do properly than promise loosely; it starts with a performance evaluation.

Nozzles like this are why a tower drifts off design. Distribution is as important as fill.
An upgrade is frequently cheaper than a replacement tower and always cheaper than the civil work a replacement implies. We will tell you when it is not the right answer.
Structural and mechanical repair, all manufacturers
We repair internal and external components, structure and mechanical equipment on towers from every manufacturer and every model, including towers whose original makers no longer exist.
Structural
Framing, columns, girts, diagonals and connection hardware in wood, concrete, steel and fiberglass. Basin and cold water basin repair, casing and louver replacement, fan deck rebuild.

Mechanical
Gear reducers, fans and fan hubs, drive shafts and couplings, motors and vibration switches. Alignment, balancing and bearing work. Gearboxes can often be rebuilt in place.

Internals
Fill, drift eliminators, nozzles and distribution systems, partition walls and air seals. Fouled, collapsed or biologically blocked internals are the most common cause of lost performance.

We can usually do it without shutting you down
On a multi-cell tower we dismantle and rebuild one cell at a time while the remaining cells stay in service. You give up a fraction of capacity for a period rather than losing the tower, and the work does not have to wait for a full plant outage.
For towers at the end of their structural life, we can also build a new tower on your existing basin, which keeps the civil works, the piping and the foundations you have already paid for.
Handrails, kneerails, walkways, grating and ladders
Cooling towers are wet, warm, chemically treated structures that people have to climb into. Access steelwork and grating degrade faster than the tower around them, and they are frequently the first thing an auditor writes up.
We replace and remediate handrails, kneerails, toe boards, walkways, grating, stair treads, ladders and cages, in galvanized steel, stainless or FRP depending on the water chemistry and the environment.
This is often the smallest job on this page and the easiest to justify. It does not need a capital project, it closes a live safety finding, and it makes every subsequent inspection and repair safer and quicker to carry out.
